Summer Student Research Program

Introduction

The Summer Student Research Program provides an eight-week research experience for the New Jersey 1st and 2nd year medical students, as well as undergraduate students enrolled in our combined BS/MD seven-year program.  Students accepted into the program are rquired to participate in research activites during the eight week period.  On many occasions this has been the students first research experience.  Participation allows students and volunteers to develop a close working relationship with their mentor.

After completing eight-weeks of research in the respective laboratories, students are required to present their research projects at the Summer Student Research Program Closing Ceremony held in late July.  At the closing ceremony students will present a PowerPoint presentation (5-minutes/individual & 10-minutes/group) on research outcomes during the eigh-week period.

NOTE:  The eight-week program will begin the first week of June and conclude on or before July 31st.  The Kick-off to the SSRP will be held on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at 10:00 am.

Projects accepted by 1st and 2nd year medical students may include a small stipend. Students enrolled in the combined BS/MD seven-year program are welcome to participate in the SSRP. However, they will be classified as interns or volunteers with no obligation of funding from the University.   Annually, by the end of February, new projects will be posted for the prospective Summer Program Participants.

Evaluation Criteria

This is a competitive program with a limited number of stipend funded projects. Students are required to complete an application, attach a copy current resume and include a brief statement indicating any prior research experience and state how it relates to the current project.  Completed applications can be emailed: Ms. Giovanna Comer at giovanna.comer@njms.rutgers.edu and copy Ms. Nathaline "Elaine" Anderson at andersna@njms.rutgers.edu.  The application and attachments will be forwarded to the Faculty Mentor for review. If the student has met the qualifications for the project he/she will be contacted by the Faculty Mentor to schedule an interview. This process could take 2-3 weeks for completion. Students are encourage to call or email Faculty Mentor regarding any questions relating to current projects.

NOTE:   Stipend support is available for a limited number of research projects. Stipend support is also reserved for 1st and 2nd year medical students.. Undergraduate students in the combined BS/MD program may participate as a volunteer or intern while fulfilling their credit requirements.
